Uprights and grands are different jobs
An upright is the piano in most Melbourne homes. It travels standing up, strapped to a trolley. We size the crew to the access, and stairs mean more hands and more time. A baby grand or a grand is a bigger job. It takes more preparation before it leaves the room, more hands, and more time at both ends, so we quote it after we know the size of the instrument and where it sits in the house. Digital pianos and keyboards are lighter and usually ride with the rest of the furniture at the hourly rate, though tell us about them anyway so the crew wraps them properly.
Whatever the type, the price is built from three things: what the piano is, what is between it and the truck at each end, and how far it is going.
Stairs, steps and the path to the truck
Stairs are what turn an easy piano move into a hard one, so they are the first thing we ask about. Tell us how many steps there are at each end, whether the stairwell turns, whether there is a lift and how wide its door is, and how far the piano has to travel from the room to where the truck can park. A split-level house, a first-floor apartment with no lift and a single-fronted terrace with a narrow hallway each need a different crew and a different amount of time, and the quote says so.
Before we arrive, clear the path from the piano to the door, roll up rugs, take pictures off the walls along the hallway, and put the stool, the lamp and the sheet music somewhere they will not be lost. Hold a parking spot as close to the door as you can. The shorter the carry, the lower the price.
With the house, interstate, or on its own
A piano often travels with the rest of the house on the same truck, shown as its own line so you can see what the piano adds to the move. Three things: the type of piano, the stairs and the carry at each end, and the distance between the two addresses. An upright on a ground floor with the truck at the door is the simplest job, and every flight of stairs or long carry adds crew and time. We price the piano as its own item once we know the type, the access and the distance, rather than folding it into the hourly rate.
Can you get an upright piano up or down a flight of stairs?
Yes. Stairs mean an extra removalist and more time, so tell us how many steps there are, whether the staircase turns, and whether the handrail or a landing narrows the path. A photo of the stairs is the most useful thing you can send.
Do you move grand pianos as well as uprights?
Yes, baby grands and grands both. A grand takes more preparation before it leaves the room and more hands at each end, so we ask for the size and where it sits before we quote it. It is a slower job than an upright, and the price reflects that.
Can the piano go on the same truck as the rest of my furniture?
Yes. It is loaded and strapped as its own item, the rest of the house is charged at the hourly rate, and the piano appears as its own line on the quote.
Can you store a piano between houses?
Yes. The piano stays wrapped in storage that is climate-controlled and under 24-hour surveillance, and comes out when the new place is ready. Short and long term storage are both available.
Will you collect a piano I have bought from someone else's house?
Yes. Give us the seller’s address and yours, the access at both, and a time the seller can have the path clear, and we collect it from the seller and deliver it to you as one job.
