About Alfords Point, NSW

Alfords Point is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Alfords Point is 26 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and forms part of the City of Hurstville local government area. It is part of the St George area, supported by various shops, schools and clubs. Alfords Point is bordered by the suburbs of Menai, Bangor and Illawong on its northern side, Barden Ridge on its southern side, and Sandy Point State Conservation Area on its western side.

Alfords Point was originally part of Hurstville Council when it was established in 1906 but became a separate suburb once the David Jones department store was established in 1927. It is named after James “Jimmy” Alford, a bushranger who operated in the area during the early 1800s.

The lake between Alfords Point and Illawong was initially known as Caddie Lake but was renamed Menai Lake by developers eager to capitalise on the name of nearby Menai.
