Tram stops mean no-stopping zones, and clearway hours push parked cars off the main roads during peak times. We use side streets one block back and time the loading so the truck is packed before the clearway window opens.
Around Swinburne University and Glenferrie station, demand for parking is constant, and student sharehouse moves at the end of semester are smaller jobs, often a single room and a car-load of boxes, suited to our smallest truck. Further south toward the Yarra River, the streets slope downhill and some driveways drop away from the road. The parks built on Hawthorn’s old quarry sites, including the green corridor along the former Kew railway line through Grace Park, back onto properties that can only be reached from the front.
Packing a Hawthorn terrace for the road
In a Hawthorn terrace there is rarely a spare room to line up fifty packed boxes overnight. Can you fit furniture through the narrow doorways in a Victorian Hawthorn home?
Most of the time, yes. The crew checks the doorway width and hallway turns before they start and works out whether a sofa goes through on its end, a door comes off its hinges, or a table needs its legs removed first. If a piece genuinely will not fit through the hall, we discuss options with you before we force anything.
Where do you park the truck on a street with tram tracks?
On the tram corridors through Hawthorn, clearway rules ban kerbside parking during peak hours on Glenferrie Road, Burwood Road and several cross streets. We use a side street one block back or time the move outside the clearway window. If your address is on a tram route, tell us when you book so we plan the truck position in advance.
Do you move students out of sharehouses near Swinburne?
Yes. End-of-semester moves around Glenferrie station are usually one or two rooms, a desk and a stack of boxes. We send a smaller truck and a two-person crew to keep the cost proportional to the load. If you are moving into shared accommodation, we can also deliver a single room of furniture from a family home or from storage.
What about the steep internal stairs in a double-storey terrace?
We carry furniture up and down stairs on most Hawthorn moves. The staircases in period terraces are often steep with a turn at the landing, so the crew plans the carry before they start, wraps items for the trip and uses blankets to protect walls and banisters on the way through.
Can you hold my furniture while I renovate a place in Hawthorn?
